Omega for DOS - Q&A

This page consolidates the FAQs and knowledge database articles from the previous site.

FAQs

I've changed the video mode and the screen has gone black/become unreadable.
The video mode is not supported by the graphics card/chipset.
Occasionally Omega will lock up under these circumstances, but usually it will still be operating normally and waiting at the user settings menu, though it will not be possible to see this. If this is the case then press Alt-v to temporarily set the video mode to VGA 640x480, allowing a new video mode to be selected.
NOTE: Care should be taken when selecting video modes to ensure that no damage is done to the the chipset or monitor by trying to drive them with unsuitable scan rates. It is advisable to find out the supported video modes of the graphics card/chipset in use before trying to change them.

I've logged into a machine that does not support my usual graphics mode and the screen has gone black/become unreadable.
Occasionally Omega will lock up under these circumstances, but usually it will still be operating normally and waiting at the main menu, though it will not be possible to see this. If this is the case then using Alt-v will temporarily set the video mode to VGA 640x480, allowing the user to set a compatible mode.
NOTE: It is advisable that before logging into a new machine with a graphics chipset different to the one normally used, the user reverts to the safe VGA 640x480 mode on the 'old' machine. This ensures that no damage is done to the the new chipset or monitor by trying to drive them with unsuitable scan rates.

Can I still upgrade Omega for DOS?
